Paper + Wheel’s start was simple in nature and strong in feeling. Rooted in a pair of hands that didn’t know the meaning of the word idle, Paper + Wheel has become a manifestation of the Northwest, filtered through the lens of homemade and handmade. Based in Portland, Oregon, Paper + Wheel features handmade wares created with a mindfulness of the environmental impact of our products. Our home-base, Hey Studio, a local studio centering women, non-binary folks, and folks of color, has provided endless mentoring and inspiration for this tiny business to find its feet. In this supportive space, our maker’s evolving relationship with the Northwest plays out in the evolution of their work. Pairing their ceramic work with recycled cotton greeting cards, postcards cut from sustainably harvested wood, prints of local landscapes and landmarks, and compostable packaging, our products evoke the Northwest aesthetic and value of sustainable living.

Our Maker

Kim Utschig, a mountain creative and doug fir doodler, found themself sitting with the concept of Paper + Wheel as they settled into the beautiful landscapes, energy, and magic of the Pacific Northwest. After endless drawings of native trees, many sunsets silhouetting Mt. Hood’s double-pointed peak, and an exploration of the beautiful wet dirt Oregon has to offer, Kim began searching for a way to make
meaning of this beautiful geography. Since the conception of Paper + Wheel as a brand and business, Kim has used a synthesis of art and nature to continue to understand and share their
ever-evolving relationship with Cascadia.

Our Mission

There is no way to ignore that the process of creating can require the use of limited natural resources. This aspect of making is a continuous point of conversation as Paper + Wheel exists among the makers movement here in the Pacific Northwest. As the Pacific Northwest spirit is a crucial point of inspiration for our work, we are working hard to honor the inherent value that Northwest culture places in sustainability and creative re-use of materials. We strive to take ownership over the fact that making auxiliary goods with paper, wood, and clay is taxing on the environment. That’s why we want to change the trade. At Paper + Wheel we put intentional effort into providing you with goods you can feel good about - goods that have a minimal environmental impact, from raw materials to shipping.

We have chosen to partner with suppliers who share this mission:
Our greeting cards and envelopes are made from 100% recycled  cotton that is acid free, recyclable, biodegradable, tree-free, and chlorine free, supplied by Paper and More.

Our wooden inlays, prints, and postcards are printed and stamped on 100% biodegradable and FSC Certified wood sources from Cards of Wood.

When we ship goods to you, we are packing well and we are packing light! With supplies from companies like EcoEnclose and ClearBags we are working towards completely compostable packing and shipping supplies.
